Product developed with UESP awarded with Innovation prize

The One Step Production Process product, developed within a partnership between the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) and Lirel (among others) was awarded with an Innovation prize in the footwear sector. The GAPI-CTCP Tecnológica 2008 awards were granted on 11 March by the Portuguese Shoe Technological Center (CTCP) in the context of the III Jornadas ShoeInov (3rd ShoeInov Days).

According to Rui Rebelo, the researcher from UESP responsible for the project, the “One Step Production Process consists of a revolutionary manufacturing concept where shoes are manufactured in a single stage (cut, seam, adjustments and finishing). For that, we use a new, modular and flexible logistic system (ONE STEP), as well as innovative software to Balance/Schedule the production line. The flexibility provided by ONE STEP, namely for small orders, has guaranteed Lirel the Innovation Award in the category of "Capital Goods".

The prizes were awarded by a panel set up by representatives of National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), Institute for the Support of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation (IAPMEI), Agência de Inovação (ADI), Portuguese Shoe Technological Center (CTCP) and Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association (APICCAPS).

This prize, awarded in the context of the One Step Production Process, is recognition of the impact and acknowledgement that this product has achieved within the national industry.
