Miguel Matos (HASLab)

A Vós a Razão

Mark Farries, Technology Advisor of Gooch & Housego Ltd (G&H)

  • "G&H has found the collaboration with INESC TEC very useful. The staff at INESC TEC have developed a substantial expertise in RF over fibre systems and we would like to collaborate in the future, particularly in space applications."

G&H had a very successful working relationship with INESC TEC on an EU FP7 funded project which had the aim of developing photonic technology for aircraft.  This project included 4 of Europe’s major aircraft manufacturers and so had a very high profile in the aerospace community. Our work with INESC TEC primarily focused on rf-photonics, which is a technique for transmitting super high frequency radio signals along optical fibres for applications such as radar, navigation and satellite communications. We have continued a relationship with INESC TEC beyond the end of the project.

Testemunho relativo ao Projeto

The project developed technology for transmitting radio frequency (rf) signals over optical fibres on aircraft. There is an increasing demand for transmission of rf signals around an aircraft for applications such as satellite communications, radar and navigation, however electrical cables for rf transmission are heavy, attenuate the signal and are subject to interference and so are undesirable on aircraft.  By modulating light with the rf signal and transmitting the signal over optical fibre cables it is possible to overcome these problems and also offer a lower cost communication medium. The project successfully addressed several applications for rf over optical fibre; including a prototype system for the distribution of WiFi signals around a passenger aircraft; a system for transmitting X –band radar into antenna that are located on helicopter rotor blades and a system for measuring aircraft attitude via differential GPS.

All the rf over fibre systems operated successfully and were demonstrated to aircraft manufacturers where they met the requirements. The project investigated factor that affect the performance such as the effect of reflections from poor quality connections.

G&H continues to develop rf over fibre components and has found the collaboration with INESC TEC very useful. The staff at INESC TEC have developed a substantial expertise in RF over fibre systems and we would like to collaborate in the future, particularly in space applications.
