Computer Science gives Darwinism a big push
Researchers from the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) and The Center for Research in Advanced Computer Systems (CRACS) of INESC Porto Associated Laboratory (LA) have joined forces to make history in the evolution of the Theory of Natural Selection. For the first time, the genome of an animal has been sequenced by a team of Portuguese researchers.

INESC Porto works with Telefónica to test surveillance services and assistance for senior citizens
The Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) at INESC Porto is one of the partners in the Complete Ambient Assisted Living Experiment - Market Validation (CAALYX-MV) project led in R&D by the Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica. CAALYX-MV is the third in a line of community funded projects by INESC Porto that work towards improving the quality of life of senior citizens in a sustainable way.

INESC Porto develops automated system for the footwear industry
The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) at INESC Porto has made recent progress with Project SIBAP, an Automated Balancing System for Production Lines. The system is geared towards the footwear industry and aims to design and develop an automated balancing system for Production Lines. The system will include graph operating sequences. It is suitable for labour-intensive production and it is linked to the concept and development of automated logistics systems capable of putting into practice the advanced balancing results.

INESC Porto works with Portucel and MIT to develop Project to manage forest fires
Over the course of three years the Innovation and Technology Transfer Unit (UITT) at INESC Porto will develop project FIRE-ENGINE–Flexible Design of Management Systems for Forest Fires. This incentive comes within the framework of MIT Portugal and Portucel Florestal SA and the Engineering Systems Division of MIT will also participate.

REN chooses INESC Porto to carry out study on National Transport Network
The team at the Power Systems Unit (USE) at INESC Porto won the contract from the Portuguese Electricity Grid (REN) to complete a study, scheduled for 2014, on Transient Stability and Voltage Control in the National Transport Network (RNT).

INESC Porto develops project CNG for New Generation Networks
The Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) and the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) both at INESC Porto have recently had project CNG approved. The project, developed within the scope of The National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF), is linked to the New Generation Network. The project will last for two years and aims to introduce interactive applications as an innovative way of providing appealing educational resources that could be used in Education and Professional Training.

INESC Porto winds up AC/DC project with positive results
The final review meeting for project AC/DC took place on 13th December in Stuttgart, Germany with all participants present along with assessors from the European Community (EC). The AC/DC project is a European project developed with INESC Porto as a member of the consortium. The project was created to develop methods capable of producing a personalised car in just five days and the results were certainly positive.

INESC Porto takes part in meeting for Living Usability Lab – LUL project
In November INESC Porto took part in the project meeting for NSRF (The National Strategic Reference Framework) Living Usability Lab – LUL (Living Usability Lab for Next Generation Networks). Other project partners include Microsoft, and the University of Aveiro in Portugal. The project, which is active in the field of live usability testing, focuses on the development of technologies and services to support healthy, productive and active senior citizens.

INESC Porto Spin-off receives award for best SME 2010
MOG Technologies, the spinoff company of INESC Porto recently received the award for the best Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) for 2010 in Portugal. They were also selected, out of 300,000 SMEs, for the SME Excellence award from the Institute for the Support of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation (IAPMEI).

INESC Porto Researcher distinguished with a "Best Paper Award" in the MODELS 2010
João Pascoal Faria, researcher at the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) at INESC Porto received the "Best Paper Award" at the MODELS 2010 - 13th International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems. The award winning article "A Metamodel-based Approach for Automatic User Interface Generation" was co-written with a doctorate student António Miguel Rosado da Cruz, from the Doctoral Programme in Informatics Engineering (ProDEI).

Carlos Soares, a researcher from the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) INESC Porto LA, recently edited the book Data Mining for Business Applications for the IOS Press. The book is about the use of data mining principally in the areas of Economics and Management and it was edited in conjunction with Rayid Ghani (Accenture Technology Labs).
