Where are you now?
Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.
Marco Silva, Accenture Technology Solutions, Programmer

- Unit(s) at INESC TEC where you worked: UTM
My transition to the labour market was quite smooth thanks to my experience at INESC TEC. I have been working at Accenture Technology Solutions practically since I’ve left and the transition to an equally challenging and stimulating environment was natural as both institutions ask us to excel.
Being surrounded by human quality has its advantages and challenges, but I believe that this was fundamental for my personal and professional growth. My experience at INESC TEC was very important, and because I was supported by everyone I felt that I was part of a team working towards a common goal. For that I would like to thank my supervisors and everyone at UTM, especially the guys of the VCMI [visual computing and machine intelligence] group.
INESC TEC has always been characterised by excellence and is one of the most influential institutes in the country. That is still my personal opinion. I don’t work at INESC TEC anymore and so I can’t say I’ve noticed many changes. I believe that INESC TEC will continue the good work and providing good results.
Adriano Cerqueira, LabCom, Laboratory of Online Communication, Researcher; Webdesigner
- Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2011-2012
- Unit(s) at INESC TEC where you worked: Communication Service
After I concluded my grant at INESC TEC, I started working at RTP [Portuguese television station], in a project where the goal was to direct a good news show called “Conta-me estórias” (tell me stories).
After that, I applied to a research Grant at LabCom, University of Beira Interior (UBI) and thus I joined the project “Communicating Science and Publishing Cultures in Humanities”. Currently, I work as a researcher and webdesigner.
The time I spent at INESC TEC allowed me to develop several skills, personally and professionally, which made me more confident and efficient in my current job. At INESC TEC I learned new work and research methodologies, I improved my scientific and technological knowledge, I learned new design and image editing skills and I improved my ability to work in teams. It was an excellent experience which has helped me grow a lot.
I confess that I’ve lost touch with the INESC TEC reality over the last two years. I read BIP to keep up with the news and it’s good to know that despite the current economic situation in the country, INESC TEC is still investing in innovation and in new projects.
Jessica Grace, Language College, Teacher of Spanish
- Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2010-2012
- Unit(s) at INESC TEC where you worked: Communication Service
While working as part of the Communication Service I was lucky enough to be part of INESC Porto as it joined forces with associate units and grew into INESC TEC. I was involved in forming Connect INESC TEC to create a network of links between the Associate Laboratory and former employees and it is now a privilege to be invited to share my experiences through the very same project.
With a heavy heart I left INESC TEC in 2012 to pursue a career teaching languages and translation back in my home country, the UK. With my experience at INESC TEC as a translator I was able to secure a job teaching Spanish at a college close to Cambridge.
My time in the Communication Service department taught me a lot about the tricks of the trade and how to use what I had learnt in my Masters in Translation in a professional environment where image and international relations are fundamental. However, what I learnt most from working at INESC TEC is the importance of enterprise. I was inspired by the ambitious and innovative researchers who, with the support of the Associate Laboratory, were able to transform their ideas into reality with a true impact. This has inspired me to follow my dream and start a company here in the UK.
I can see clear growth and development at INESC TEC. INESC TEC now has a group dedicated to biomedical research and innovation, an area with clear developments in the UK in previous months. Through tough economic times I am proud to look at INESC TEC and still see an Associate Laboratory that is not only surviving but thriving and taking on more and more new international projects.
