INESC TEC develops platform that records, annotates and processes videos

A platform to record, annotate and process videos – this is the final result of project ASSIST, developed by INESC TEC’s Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) for the company InovRetail Lda. The tools created as part of the project are now being tested and validated and they will be applied in the commercial sector.

Other than the platform, “we also developed algorithms to spatially detect and locate people in the area that is being monitored,” explains Pedro Carvalho, who coordinated a team of six researchers: Américo Pereira, Hélder Castro, João Monteiro, João Pinho, Sérgio Soares and João Botelho.
The main goal with ASSIST was to study and develop technology and algorithms to use in videos in order to analyse movement patterns with groups of people in confined areas.

The project started in 2012 and it was requested by InovRetail – an innovation company working in the Retail sector that develops technology-based solutions that help improve the experience of consumers in retail spaces, by making them more appealing, dynamic and efficient, delivering a measurable return to clients.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this article are associated with the following partner institutions: INESC Porto.
