INESC TEC demonstrates medical technology in the United States

On 18 February, the manager of the recently created Centre for Research in Biomedical Engineering (C-BER) at INESC TEC, Aurélio Campilho, presented the RetinaCAD in a workshop that took place in California, in the United States. The RetinaCAD is a computer assisted medical diagnosis tool based on the analysis of images of the retina.

The RetinaCAD analyses images of the retina and performs an objective evaluation of vascular changes caused by systemic illnesses, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The technology is the result of research developed over several years by a team coordinated by Aurélio Campilho and Ana Maria Mendonça, working as researchers at the National Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB).

“The RetinaCAD not only drew the attention of several conference participants, from young researchers to researchers with established careers, but also from companies working on computer aided diagnosis,” Aurélio Campilho stressed.

Integrated in the 2014 SPIE Medical Imaging Conference, the goal with this workshop is to annually provide a forum in the area of systems and algorithms where researchers can showcase their work and exchange ideas and experiences.
