In fact, the initialism ECMLPKDD2015 is, in itself, a big data problem. For that reason, the organising committee chose it instead of a more pompous name.

An overview of my first year at INESC TEC

Inês Castro*

Now that I’m about to celebrate my first year at INESC TEC, I was very excited when I got the invitation to write an article for the “Have Your Say” section, where I am going to try to show what we do at the Accounting and Finance service (CF).

The CF is responsible for INESC TEC’s financial management, and for coordinating and executing all financial tasks and fiscal obligations. Moreover, this service is responsible for managing purchases, fixed assets, insurance and travels, which causes us to be in constant contact with INESC TEC’s employees, researchers and grant holders. More specifically, we translate all INESC TEC activity into numbers, taking into consideration the respective accounting and fiscal rules. Consequently, this leads to information on management and decision support, which are key for the institution’s success. This means that we pay the tab after the party, and we always ask for a receipt!!

Our greatest challenge is effectively responding to the needs of the services and 12 R&D centres, always striving to guarantee the accuracy and  reliability that come with the job. We want to support and promote the development of new projects, without disregarding the rules we have to follow. Balancing these tasks is what we do at every day the CF. If people ask us to buy drones, mince pies, drawbridges, eyeglasses, rabbits, or event scents, we make sure that they are purchased and  accounted for!

Personally, the experience has been very positive not only because the job is demanding, but also because INESC TEC is a nationally and internationally renowned institute. For that reason, as a research grant holder, I can acquire and develop new professional and personal skills in the challenges I have to face and the projects I have to work on.

In conclusion, and maybe because the best is always saved for last, I cannot write about the CF without mentioning its team. I have always believed – and I still do – that the key to the success of any organisation is the quality of its human resources. And in our service this is no exception. This team is know for their companionship, dedication, group spirit and mutual help, and I am lucky to be part of this group. This applies not only to my colleagues but also to my boss. They are the true soul of this service.
