Have your say

"I have always believed – and I still do – that the key to the success of any organisation is the quality of its human resources. And in our service this is no exception.", Inês Castro (CF)

Free Nonsense

"Now, Portuguese people, yes come here and listen to me well: I know that you know the basics so why do you have to drive me crazy?", Dario Messina (CESE)

Gallery of the Uncommon

In fact, the initialism ECMLPKDD2015 is, in itself, a big data problem. For that reason, the organising committee chose it instead of a more pompous name.

Limelight

Every month, this section will honour a collaborator for an exceptional contribution in his/her area of activity. BIP’s Editors will have the final choice. However, the cooperation of every Centre Coordinator is precious since they will be the ones suggesting which collaborator should be distinguished.

Equipa Controlo de Gestão

Bárbara Maia, Marta Barbas, Lídia Vilas Boas, Vanda Ferreira and Pedro Almeida | July/August

The Board of INESC TEC stated – “The Board of INESC TEC would like to nominate to the Limelight section the management control team composed of Marta Barbas, Vanda Ferreira, Pedro Almeida, Bárbara Maia, and also the person responsible for the secretariat, Lídia Vilas Boas. They have all been involved in the submission of INESC TEC proposals. Marta’s performance was extraordinary, not only for her team leadership but also for her dedication. The team’s energy, dedication, performance and availability in the challenge of submitting proposals were outstanding, especially Vanda, who from the first day collected and organised information, attributed tasks, always with great professionalism, dedication and perfectionism. In fact, she did not rest (in the true sense of the word!) until all proposals were submitted!”

Mário Rui Pereira

Mário Rui Pereira (CTM) | July/August

The coordinators of the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) states –“We would like to nominate Mário Rui Pereira for his extraordinary role in CTM projects and for his performance, in July/August 2015, in project Hiperwireless (HiperWireless: Point-to-Multipoint Microwave Communications using the 17GHz License-free Band), for which he successfully developed high performance electromagnetic devices and RF/microwave circuits. Mário is very autonomous, dedicated and scientifically mature, with a vast knowledge in the areas of radio-frequency and antennas, from the design phase to simulation, development, testing and characterisation. He has also been involved, with equal performance and dedication, in other strategic projects in the area of optics and electronics, namely in the NSRF [National Strategic Reference Framework] projects: VSAT, WiSAT and UNISAT.”

Luís Filipe Antunes

Luís Filipe Antunes (CRACS) | July/August

The Coordinator of the Centre for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS) stated – “Luís Antunes joined CRACS/INESC TEC, first as collaborator and then, as of 2013, as a sitting member. Ever since then he has been playing a fundamental and active role in the life of this centre and our institution, not only by finding projects, but also by establishing service provision partnerships, an area in which this centre did not have a strong presence. Luís has helped consolidate the area of security at CRACS, and recently he has led one Norte2020 project, and had one of his European projects approved. He is still enthusiastics about preparing and promoting new consortiums  in areas such as big data, security and health. At the same time, he is the President of the Department of Computer Science and Director of the Centre of Competence in Cyber Security of the University of Porto."

Sérgio Costa

Sérgio Costa (CITE) | July/August

The Coordinators of Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) stated – “We would like to nominate Sérgio Costa for the Limeligh section following the Heizer Award he received in August for best PhD thesis in the area of entrepreneurship. This is the first time that a Portuguese researcher receives this award. Sérgio Costa, researcher at INESC TEC, visiting assistant professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) and guest researcher at the Universty of Gent (Belgium), received the award on 10 August, in Vancouver (Canadá), at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management.”

Equipa CROB

Héber Sobreira, Elisabete Fernandes e Carlos Costa (CROB) | September

The Coordinators of Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB) stated: “The INESC TEC team composed of Elisabete Fernandes, Carlos Costa and Héber Sobreira did an exception job in the European project  CARloS – Cooperative Assembly for Large Scale Manufacturing. The features of this project – which consisted of fully developing a unique manipulator robot –,  combined with the fact that the project had only a duration of 24 months, required an extremely highly level of dedication and  professionalism from the team. Simultaneously, they worked efficiently in international collaborative projects. Even though the time was scarce, the team still had time to publish two papers in international conferences, 1 book chapter and a paper in an international journal.”

Lino Oliveira

Lino Oliveira (CSIG) | September

The Coordinators of the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) – “We would like to nominate Lino Oliveira for the Limelight section due to his exceptional performance and successful conclusion of project 3PORT. This project has a total budget of 1M€, with Lino Oliveira representing INESC TEC as Technical Director of the project, working together with the company  TRIEDE TTI  and interacting with the end user, APDL. This project suffered a lot of setbacks: the application, discontinuance, resubmission, rejection, complains, and finally approval and execution. Throughout the entire process, Lino Oliveira was highly professional and brought the project to a satisfactory conclusion. Last month, the project’s public component was launched – the 3PORT Live Map. We think now is the right time to highlight this excellent performance.”

CPES team

Luís Miguel Miranda (CPES) and João Ramos (CPES) | September

The Coordinators of the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) – “We would like to nominate Luís Miguel Miranda and João Cunha Ramos for their extraordinary performance in project Sustainable (Smart distribUtion System operaTion for mAximizing the INtegration of renewABLE generation). As part of this project, the researchers defined, designed, developed and tested, in a completely autonomous way, the second generation of smart converters for distributed energy resources which are now being tested in the Inovcity pilot in Évora. They were very committed, responsible and motivated to overcome all the obstacles, successfully guaranteeing the integration of prototypes in a real environment, a result that is worth highlighting.”
