INESC TEC in another mining project
Portugal will be participating in a European project where the goal is to explore, using robots, mines that have been closed and are partially underwater. The project will provide five million euros to build the first robots in the world capable of operating underground, autonomously and remotely. The submersible system will be tested in Portugal, Finland, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.

Project SUSTAINABLE comes to an end
Project SuSTAINABLE (Smart distribution system operation for maximizing the integration of renewable generation), which began in January 2013, has come to an end. The goal with this project was to develop advanced algorithms and features to support the operation of the distribution network in order to maximise the integration of renewable energies in a safe and sustainable way. The closing event took place on 30 and 31 March in Lisbon and Évora, respectively.

INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Management and Engineering (CEGI) has recently concluded project “WholeChain: Quantitative Framework for Perishable Food Supply Chain Management”, where the goal was to develop a quantitative framework that would make it possible to better manage the supply chain of perishable foods.

Contract with EDP promotes renewable energy in the Azores
INESC TEC has recently signed a contract with EDA - Electricidade do Açores (electricity provider in the Azores islands) for the provision of specialised technical consultancy services. As part of this contract, INESC TEC will be conducting different studies to find solutions for building pure reversible hydroelectric power plants on the islands of São Miguel and Terceira.

INESC TEC will develop industrial robot that works with humans in the automotive and aerospace industry
The kick-off meeting for project ColRobot project (Collaborative Robotics for Assembly and Kitting in Smart Manufacturing) took place on 18 and 19 February in Lille, France. INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics in Industry and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS) was represented in this project meeting, which features partners from five European Union countries.

Project ICARUS comes to an end
In February, INESC TEC concluded ICARUS (Integrated Components for Assisted Rescue and Unmanned Search operations), a European project where the goal was to develop autonomous robots that could assist rescue teams in disaster situations. The project brought together 24 partners from nine countries. With a 17 million euro budget, the project lasted four years.

Carlos Baquero, researcher at INESC TEC’s High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) and professor at the University of Minho, is the first INESC TEC researcher to publish an article in the journal Communications of the ACM. The article, titled “Why logical clocks are easy” was published in the journal’s April issue.

First researchers in the Iberian Peninsula to be global certified analytics professionals
On 9 April, Bernardo Almada-Lobo, member of the Board of INESC TEC, and Pedro Amorim, coordinator of INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), took an exam in Orlando (USA) to obtain the CAP®, the global professional certification for premier analytics practitioner. There are only 350 certified people in the world, with the majority coming from the US and Canada.

INESC TEC researcher is judge in international IEEE competition
Ricardo Queirós, researcher at INESC TEC’s Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), will integrate the team of eight judges of the IEEEmadC (Mobile Applications Development Contest), sponsored by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). The INESC TEC researcher is the only Portuguese in the group.

Manuel Barbosa, coordinator of INESC TEC’s High-Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) and professor at the University of Porto’s Faculty of Science, and José Bacelar Almeida, researcher at HASLab and professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Minho, received a best paper award at the conference Fast Software Encryption 2016, which took place in late March in Bochum, Germany.

INESC TEC takes concert "a.bel - New Music Interactive" to Boston
The second edition of concert “a.bel – New Music Interactive” took place at the David Friend Hall, one of the auditoriums of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, on March 3. With about 100 people in the audience, “the concert was not exactly a replica of the concert in Porto since there was a new piece made by students from the Berklee Interdisciplinary Arts Institute”, explains Rui Penha, researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia who is leading the project.

On 14 April, INESC TEC participated in the EURODEFENSE conference, with the theme "Economy of Defense: dual-use research and technology projects - The Turtle Project", which took place at the Naval Academy in Lisbon.
