INESC TEC participated in the “Praça da Saúde” of the University of Porto

Within the framework of the TEC4Heath, the approach to the Health sector, INESC TEC participated in the “Praça da Saúde” initiative, which took place on 23 November at the Rectory of the University of Porto. Besides strengthening the partnership with the University of Porto at EIT Health, this initiative also aimed at increasing the health literacy in a day that was open to the public that included screenings, technology exposition, conferences, lectures, cooking show and physical activity classes.

INESC TEC's presence at the event was highlighted by the stand of sharing of innovation and technologies in the health area, namely with the presentation of three projects: WeSENSS, ISEABlind and Passus.

WeSENSS is a startup that resulted from a technology to be developed in the VR2Market project for the development of new wearable devices and their integration in a IoT platform. This technology allows for a continuous and in real-time individual monitoring, by means of a web interface, of the individuals’ condition in terms of both the physical state (parameters related to stress, temperature, physical activity, among others) and the surrounding environment (temperature, humidity, toxic gases, particles, among others). The technological solution has several applications in terms of management and team monitoring and it’s being applied in the monitoring of firefighthers, helping in the management and the decision support during risky situations.

Duarte Dias and Susana Rodrigues from the Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER) and Cristina Machado Guimarães from the Industry Partnership Service (SAPE) were the INESC TEC’s collaborators present in this stand.

ISEABlind project consists in an autonomous navigation system for blind people. It was awarded by the ICT and Society Network and by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) with the Digital Inclusion and Literacy Prize 2015. This project aims at the use of information and communication technologies as a way to promote the integration and mobility of visually impaired people, already having a prototype composed of a smartphone and a smart cane.

Finally, and presenting itself as a platform for physical exercise prescription monitored for the peripheral arterial disease, the Passus Mobile system aims to help the healthcare professionals in monitoring the exercise of outpatients with peripheral arterial disease. A tool was developed, comprised of a wearable monitoring system that uses a mobile phone or a smartwatch, and a cloud platform for the visualisation of information, allowing the monitoring of exercise through the prescription and monitoring of plans adapted to each patient.

Cristina Machado Guimarães (SAPE), Hugo Fernandes (Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia – CTM), Dennis Paulino and Hugo Paredes (Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics – CSIG), alongside João Vicente and Isabel Machado (from UTAD) represented INESC TEC.
