INESC TEC participates in the launch of the second phase of Industry 4.0
Under the initiative Industry 4.0, promoted by the Portuguese Ministry of Economy, INESC TEC was present at the launch of the second phase of the Programme, which took place on 9 April at the Azurém Campus of the University of Minho, in Guimarães.
Having APMEI and COTEC Portugal as official partners, this event was attended by António Costa, Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Siza Vieira, Minister in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister and of Minister of Economy, and João Correia Neves, Secretary of State of Economy were present in the dissemination session of the Programme Industry 4.0.
A set of parallel sessions was held on key topics related to the digitalisation of the Portuguese economy, such as "CyberSecurity", "Financing", "Artificial Intelligence", "E-commerce", "Smartfactories" and "Work 4.0”. In the parallel session dedicated to the topic of Artificial Intelligence, Alípio Jorge, coordinator of INESC TEC’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), was one of the speakers.
At the same time, a national technological show was held entitled “Feira da Indústria do Futuro” (in English "Industry Fair of the Future"), which allowed around 15 Portuguese companies and institutions to present a number of technological solutions within the scope of Industry 4.0. INESC TEC was present in a joint space with the company TALUS, in which it demonstrated a prototype developed for the transportation and reorientation of boxes, combining technologies of a different nature for the purpose. It is a set of conveyor belts developed externally, that attach to a central table (demonstration of an AIV – Autonomous Intelligent Vehicle) related to the movement of boxes, in a system that intends to remedy a weakness present in the industry, that consists in the inability of reorienting objects with just one belt. The solution currently in force incorporates a set of belts vertically attached in different layers, in which each belt is linked to an entry/exit direction, not allowing the freedom of movements of this technology.
The Industry 4.0 Programme is an initiative that is integrated in the National Strategy for the Digitisation of the Economy, which aims to create favourable conditions for the development of national industry and services in the new paradigm of Digital Economy. In particular, this second phase intends to stimulate the economic and social growth through a mass digital transformation of the business fabric.
