Member of INESC TEC’s Board presents Viewing Centre of MACC

Rui Oliveira, Director of Minho Advanced Computing Centre (MACC), Member of INESC TEC's Board and Professor at the University of Minho, presented on 5 April the Viewing Centre of MACC in an event attended by Manuel Heitor, Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education.

Under the visit to MACC, Manuel Heitor went to the data centre of REN, in Riba de Ave, where the first national supercomputer is set up and witnessed the implementation, at the University of Minho, of the first national network of viewing labs of MACC.

MACC is a national infrastructure of advanced computing, oriented to support and stimulate research in several topics fundamental to the implementation, optimisation and exploration of high-performance computing systems, as well as to promote the creation, expansion and consolidation of centres of R&D activity in different scientific domains where the use of great calculating capabilities or data processing is important, namely in the areas of digital simulation, data science and machine learning.

Also in this visit, the delegation addressed the implementation of the Iberian Advanced Computing Network (RICA) and the ongoing proposal to set up in Portugal a new supercomputer from the newly created EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, both coordinated by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), in collaboration with the National Digital Competences Initiative (INCoDe.2030).

Besides Manuel Heitor and Rui Oliveira, the delegation present in this inauguration included the Rector of the University of Minho, Rui Vieira de Castro, the Coordinator of INCoDE.2030 and Consultant to the Chairman of INESC TEC, Pedro Guedes de Oliveira, and the Member of the Board at FCT, Nuno Rodrigues.
