INESC Porto supports OECD in the development of complex sensing networks

José Luís Santos, coordinator of the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE), was invited to participate in the “OECD Experts Conference on Using Sensor-Based Networks to Address Global Issues: Policy Opportunities and Challenges”, organized by OECD on 8 and 9 June.

The conference, which took place in Lisbon, gathered several experts who aimed at helping OECD in the definition of recommendations for Sensing Networks that will afterwards be made public with the governments. Among the themes debated at the event, we highlight the following: Health and Elderly Population Care, Intelligent Transportation Systems and the Discussion of Public Policy for several areas.

The meeting welcomed several participants, including Luís Magalhães, President of UMIC (Knowledge Society Agency) and Vice-President of OECD’s Information, Computer and Communication Policy Committee, who was the Conference chair. Other participants included José Viegas, coordinator of the Intelligent Transportation Systems within the MIT – Portugal Programme, Manuel Barros, Director of ANACOM’s Communications Security Office, João Barros, Director of the CMU – Portugal Programme, Augusto Casa of INESC and A. Luís de Osório of the Instituto Superior Técnico.

According José Luís Santos, this meeting was extremely important because “it made it clear that the development of complex sensing networks is one of the strategic areas that governments should give priority to, as far as R&D, pilot projects and regulation are concerned”.
