INESC Porto, UTEN|Portugal and U.Porto organise ICTPI ‘09

INESC Porto has organised, together with UTEN|Portugal and U.Porto, the 12th International Conference on Technology Policy and Innovation (ICTPI’09), which took place on 13 and 14 July, at the Casa da Música concert hall, in Porto.

Science, technology and knowledge activities were the themes discussed at this conference, more specifically their role in the long-term fight against the world financial crisis. Under the theme “Science, Technology and Knowledge networks – long-term strategies to face the financial crisis”, the Conference aimed at providing a challenging environment for the development of strategic answers to face the economic crisis. Throughout the Conference, it was possible to discuss long-term concerns, taking into consideration important aspects related to research and development, higher education and science-based innovation.

The Conference welcomed important national and international representatives in the academic, business and governmental areas, as well as representatives from other relevant sectors. Belmiro de Azevedo (President of the Management Board of Sonae SGPS), José Marques dos Santos (Dean of the University of Porto), Daniel Bessa (CEO of COTEC), Charles Wessner (Adviser to President Obama, National Academy of Sciences), Heinrich Flegel (Vice-President of the Daimler – Mercedes-Benz group) and Pier Carlo Padoan (Deputy Secretary General at OECD) were some of the important guests present at this Conference.

In order to illustrate some examples of successful business activities established within the National Scientific and Technological System (SCTN), more than 20 technology-based companies operating in the global market – such as ALERT, MOG Solutions, Multiwave Networks and Critical Software – presented their evolution, experience and main challenges for the future.

“Industrial Policies”, “Entrepreneurship, Business Incubation and Venture Capital”, “Technology Transfer”, “Science Parks and Technopolis”, “Technolocy-Based Innovation” and “The Role of Universities” were only some of the themes discussed throughout the two-day Conference.

Besides representatives of the international academic community in the areas of science and technology, Technology Transfer Officers, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology-based company managers, this Conference welcomed an outstanding number of more than 150 experts from all over the world.
