INESC PORTO helps prepare Europe for the massification of the electric car
INESC Porto is the scientific leader of the project MERGE (Mobile Energy Resources for Grids of Electricity) – the largest EU-financed research project that will prepare the European electrical system for the massification of electric vehicles. The aim with this 4.5 million Euro project is to find solutions that will minimize the need to strengthen to electric grid infrastructures and power systems, and thus avoid extra costs that would have to be borne by the users of the electric vehicles.

INESC Porto takes digital democracy to the entire country
INESC Porto has developed a collaborative platform for the elaboration and public discussion of the Regional Plans for Town and Country Planning (PROT) for the most part of Portugal’s regions. With this platform, all platform users managed to achieve significant time gains and to reduce costs. The Commissions for the Coordination and Regional Development of Lisbon and Tagus Valley (CCDR-LVT), North (CCDR-N) and Centre regions (CCDR-C) all adopted the platform, supporting the PROTs of the West and Tagus Valley (PROT-OVT), North (PROT-N), Centre (PROT-C) and Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (PROT-AML). Three years after the platform was launched, it is now time to make a balance of the tool’s functionalities. BIP interviewed some of the most important participants in these works in order to understand the benefits that the platform developed by INESC Porto brought to the regions and to citizens.

Hungary follows recommendation from a study developed by USE
The Hungarian Energy Authority has announced that a call for applications for the installation of wind production in the country will be launched. The definition of the limits for the wind power to be installed in Hungary was the result of a study that the Power Systems Units (USE) developed for this Energy Authority in 2008.

The kick-off meeting for the project FIT4U - Framework of Integrated Technologies for User Centred Products took place in Milan on 15 July. INESC Porto was represented at the meeting by Rui Rebelo, researcher at the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP).

INESC Porto creates music on wheels with the Skate Ensemble
The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is currently developing the Skate Ensemble project, together with the Junior University programme. Promoted by Casa da Música’s Educational Service, this project aims at the creation of sounds and graphic images through the acrobatic movements of skaters, habitués at the Casa da Música outside space.

INESC Porto contributes to the modernization of avionic communication networks
INESC Porto has recently started working on a new European project whose aim is to introduce the most advanced optical fibre communication network technologies in future aviation fleets. The kick-off meeting of the DAPHNE project took place at the AIRBUS head office in Hamburg, Germany, in September this year.

The Telecommunications and Multimedia (UTM) has participated in the VISNET Network of Excellence (Networked audiovisual media technologies), whose activities took place in two phases, with a total duration of five years. The activities were concluded in June 2009.

UESP starts European project on Virtual Factories
The European project "Holistic, extensible, scalable and standard Virtual Factory Framework (VFF)" started on 1 September. Inserted in the 7th EU Framework Programme, the VFF project aims at supporting industrial companies, providing tools that make it possible to improve processes related to the design, management, evaluation and reconfiguration of new or existing industrial facilities.

Researcher from LIAAD wins PremeIA award
Carlos Soares, researcher from the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) was one of the winners of the Merit and Excellence in Artificial Intelligence Award - PremeIA. The winners were presented in a solemn session that took place on 4 July during the 25th Anniversary Session of APPIA (Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence), at the Convent of the Order of Christ, in the city of Tomar.

Inês Dutra, researcher at the Center for Research in Advanced Computing Systems (CRACS), visited the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TAAC), in Austin (USA), last August, in the context of the Colab programme, in collaboration with the Portuguese Government and the University of Texas.

Future Places Festival returns to Porto
The Future Places Festival, organised under the coordination of the University of Porto and with the intervention of researchers and professors from INESC Porto, from the School of Fine Arts and from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), took place once again in the city of Porto between 13 and 17 October. This Festival is financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the context of the UTAustin|Portugal Programme.
