Researcher from LIAAD wins PremeIA award

Carlos Soares, researcher from the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) and professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP) was one of the winners of the Merit and Excellence in Artificial Intelligence Award - PremeIA. The winners were presented in a solemn session that took place on 4 July during the 25th Anniversary Session of APPIA (Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence), at the Convent of the Order of Christ, in the city of Tomar.

Instituted by APPIA in the year of its 25th anniversary, the aim with this award is to identify, acknowledge and disseminate works of excellence developed both nationally and internationally by Portuguese researchers in the domain of Artificial Intelligence, after they have obtained their PhD.

Having analysed twenty participations, APPIA’s Board has decided to distinguish the individual careers of Carlos Soares, researcher at LIAAD, Inês Lynce from the Instituto Superior Técnico and Penousal Machado of the University of Coimbra.

The researcher obtained his PhD in 2004, having already published, together with other authors, a work on Data Mining, entitled “Applications of Data Mining in E-Business and Finance”.

Carlos Soares on winning the award:

“The main thing is that this award is yet another indicator of the good work that we have been developing at LIAAD-INESC Porto LA, under the coordination of Prof. Pavel Brazdil.

From my personal point of view, it is hard to answer without plagiarising some interviews given by footballers when they are transferred to another club: I was naturally very pleased, and I feel more and more motivated to continue working with the added responsibility of working harder and better.”
