Future Places Festival returns to Porto

The Future Places Festival, organised under the coordination of the University of Porto and with the intervention of researchers and professors from INESC Porto, from the School of Fine Arts and from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), took place once again in the city of Porto between 13 and 17 October. This Festival is financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the context of the UTAustin|Portugal Programme.

Entitled “Future Places 2009 | Digital Media and Local Cultures”, this is a festival that focuses on the importance of digital media as active development agents in local cultures. In the context of the Festival, several initiatives in the area of digital media took place, such as workshops, conferences, seminars, concerts, performances, project competitions, flashmob, exhibitions and broadcasts from Radiofutura, the official radio of Future Places.

The 2009 edition of Future Places welcomed renowned guests, such as Hugh Forrest, Event Director of the SXSW Interactive Festival (South by Southwest), and jury of the festival, Jon Wozencroft, director of Touch multimedia publishing company, Steven Devleminck, director of the Transmedia Brussels programme, Marc Behrens, musician and field recordist, Bruce Pennycook, of the  Butler School of Music – University of Texas, Zach Smith, of the Thingiverse project, and Golan Levin, of the Carnegie Mellon University, and other important international members working in the area of digital media.

Future Places is an annual event based on the cooperation between several national institutions that involves a multidisciplinary dialogue between students and researchers in the areas of engineering, arts, social and communication sciences, in a close collaboration between national and international artists.
