I left INESC TEC to join EDF R&D in Clamart, near Paris. I am with the Department of Energy System Economics, performing research on power distribution and smart grid applications. My duties include representing EDF in various European instances (SEDC, Smart Grid Task Force), advising several directions of the EDF group, and developing new tools for economic analysis of smart grid solutions in energy systems. I generally address problems related to i) assessing the impact of new technologies and services on generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructures, with a specific emphasis on network reinforcement and planning, ii) assessing technical and business schemes for smart grid data management.
My activities are in line with the tasks I completed by INESC TEC. They involve the same area of expertise, but target a more operational community of decision-makers at the industry and regulatory level. I have less responsibilities in writing proposals and setting up large R&D projects, but more opportunities to carry messages to decision places by EDF or at the EU level. Nevertheless, I have some autonomy to develop small-scale projects, typically funding and advising internships and PhD thesis, which will hopefully lead to me to collaborate again with the teams of INESC TEC.
Na sua opinião como é que a sua experiência no INESC TEC ajudou no novo papel?
I am particularly grateful to INESC TEC for the excellent framework it offered for our collaboration.
During my stay in Porto, I built a solid experience in EU-projects elaboration and management and got the opportunity to understand how first-class research institutes work, and how their research and innovation strategy must be developed. Although those aspects are not directly under my responsibility at EDF, this experience is a great advantage to evolve in larger structures.
From a non-professional perspective, my stay in Porto brought me lots of satisfactions and few frustrations. Overall, it was a great experience to come live in Portugal with my family.
Na sua opinião, o INESC TEC mudou em quais aspectos desde a sua saída?
I left only 18 months ago, so INESC TEC has not changed that much!
As the USE teams has been relatively stable recently, I guess the most significant change is the extension of the building on FEUP Campus. It must be exciting and challenging to settle existing units in new facilities. I would have liked to share this moment.
From a more personal point of view, I would love to see how projects that I initiated have gone and what achievements they lead to.
