We started working with INESC TEC as partners in the DAPHNE project in September 2009.
This successful project finished in 2013 but due to the strong constructive relationships developed on the project we still interact on technology areas of mutual interest. The project aimed to apply established telecommunications and industrial optical networking technology for use in future aircraft. INESC TEC were a very important and proactive partner during this time. As well as the fibre optic technology of this project, we have also had useful discussions with INESC TEC over free space optical communication systems and underwater communication systems.

DAPHNE was a three and a half year FP7 project started in September 2009. The primary objective of DAPHNE was to enable the full exploitation of terrestrial optical networking technology, with its associated performance developments and advantages, in future European aircrafts and systems. The project adopted key component and network technologies from commercial markets.
13 partners representing the whole industry were involved in the project, including air-framers, component manufacturers and universities: (Airbus Operations GmbH, Vivid Components Ldt., EADS Deutschland GmbH, BAE Systems (Operations) Ltd., AgustaWestland, Selex Galileo , Gooch & Housego (Torquay) Ltd., D-Lightsys S.A.S., SQS Vlaknova Optika A.S., INESC Porto, TU Ilmenau, Danmarks TU, GMV S.A.)
INESC TEC were key members of the consortium, fully committed to the development of technology and bringing significant technical know-how and innovation. We found that INESC TEC understood the issues in going from initial concepts to practical realisations that would be potentially exploitable in harsh environments. As well as novel concepts, the development of components into sub-systems which could be demonstrated in visually simple practical examples was a strength of the INESC TEC contribution. Members of INESC TEC spent some time at BAE Systems in the UK to help integrate their RF over fibre technology onto a vehicle in Bristol which was then successfully shown to DAPHNE partners and a wider audience. This technology was one of those from the DAPHNE project which have real future benefit to BAE Systems and which we hope to see in future products.
Overall INESC TEC were a trusted partner and one where we hope to have a long relationship with. The expertise at INESC TEC extends beyond the initial DAPHNE remit and this coupled with the ease of developing a constructive working relationship is expected to lead to further successful interaction.
