UOSE develops environmental monitoring system for the Amazon region

The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is currently developing a prototype to sense chemical parameters within the project “Study and Development of Optical Sensors to Monitor Environmental Parameters Remotely”. The project will be applied in the Amazon region, more specifically in the city of Belém, in Pará, where the rivers Guamá and Igarapé Sapocajuba present concerning pollution levels.

The specific aim of the “Study and Development of Optical Sensors to Monitor Environmental Parameters Remotely”, which will be concluded in December 2011, is to develop and test the prototype to sense chemical parameters, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, important components in environmental monitoring. With this project, it is possible to demonstrate the feasibility of a remote system to monitor the presence of pollutants in certain ecosystems, such as rivers, estuaries, lagoons and coastal areas.

Other than INESC Porto, the project’s partners include the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (Military Institute of Engineering), the Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca, the Federal University of Espírito Santo, the Fluminense Federal University and the Federal University of Pará.
