President of INESC Porto’s Scientific Advisory Board awarded twice

José Carlos Príncipe, President of INESC Porto’s Scientific Advisory Board, has recently been awarded by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society with the 2011 IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award. This award acknowledges significant contributions in terms of concepts and sustainable development within neural networks.

This prize acknowledges two types of contributions supported over the past fifteen years: fundamental understanding and engineering applications. This annual award is given to  an individual that has contributed to the improvement of the theory, technologies and/or application of neural networks through the development of new technologies, thus making it possible to achieve innovative technical developments, implementing new products, or managing the design or process of developing an innovative product.

Interviewed by BIP, José Carlos Príncipe acknowledges the importance that this award has on his career. “I’m very proud because I went to the United States in 1985 to learn the foundations of this area and it’s extraordinary how, twenty five years later, my work has been acknowledged by the international community as being relevant to this area”, he highlights. The award ceremony will take place next year in San Jose, California.

The professor also received recently a doctoral honoraris causa degree by the Aalto University School of Science and Technology, Finland. The award ceremony took place on 1 October 2010 in Helsinki. This is the third doctoral honoraris causa that José Carlos Príncipe receives (the first one was in Italy and the second one in Brazil).
