Microsoft creates Research Lab for Next Generation Networks

Microsoft Portugal has recently launched the LUL - Living Usability Lab for Next Generation Networks, a collaborative R&D project co-financed by the QREN programme (National Strategic Reference Framework), led by Microsoft and developed by a consortium where INESC Porto is participating, through the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM).

The aim with this new project is to create a distributed lab, with real users, which makes it possible to develop new universal services, using intelligent interfaces with the user. The aim with this new lab is to build living Labs where it is possible to simulate environments and scenarios where technologies may be used by the end users in a real environment.

INESC Porto’s participation in the project QREN LUL focuses essentially on the development of tracking algorithms for environments with one camera or multiple cameras operating in real time.

The consortium also includes the companies Plux and Micro-IO and three Portuguese universities and institutes other than INESC Porto: University of Aveiro (UA), IEETA and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).
