INESC Brazil Network welcomes two more Brazilian universities
The Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI) and the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) have recently joined the INESC Brazil Network, a cooperation network managed by INESC R&D Brazil.
Strategically located in the South of Minas Gerais, Brazil, UNIFEI was for many years the main university for business professionals in the area of electric power in Brazil. The institution is known mainly for the High Voltage Laboratory of the Federal University of Itajubá (LaT-Efei), which specialises in testing high voltage equipment, and therefore it is a reference in Brazil in the field of High Voltage. UNIFEI is also known for hosting worldwide renowned experts, such as Armando Martins Leite da Silva, IEEE Fellow, who received an IEEE award for his contribution in the area of reliability in large power systems.
“By joining the INESC Brazil Network, these institutions will consolidate their bonds with INESC TEC and INESC R&D Brazil”, says the director of INESC R&D Brazil, Mauro Rosa. The Lat-Efei will host a PhD from the INESC Brazil Network between 2014 and 2016, as part of a joint project with INESC R&D Brazil, funded by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) in Brazil.
As for FFU, the history of collaboration with INESC TEC dates back to the 1990s, when lecturers from both institutions started conducting joint projects in the areas of energy and computing. More recently, the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC TEC started collaborating with this Brazilian institution in the area of telecommunications, and it was through this relationship that the opportunity to join the INESC Brazil Network came to be.
Moreover, the body of UFF faculty members includes a PhD trained at INESC TEC in the power area, “which makes it easier to disseminate the way the institution works and its culture in conducting projects”, states Mauro Rosa. The main areas of cooperation with the UFF are telecommunications, energy and computing. “The Computer Science area at the UFF will be a promising cluster for the implementation of projects together with the INESC Brazil Network”, concludes Mauro Rosa.
