Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC

After I left INESC TEC, I progressively started developing mobile applications, and presently I’m part of the Android team at Twitter.

In the past, I worked for DoubleTwist and LarvaLabs, two small companies located in the United States, also in Android projects. At the same time, some colleagues and I created a mini studio for videogames, We Came From Mars, which is still running today. These last years have been intense!

I could say that developing an ad-hoc communication platform for PDAs during my traineeship at INESC TEC was very useful for my current position, but it is obvious that the PhD I completed under the supervision of Prof. Manuel Ricardo has had a much bigger impact on the professional I am today.

Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC

After I concluded by traineeship at INESC TEC, I came back to Brazil to conclude my PhD in Computer Science at the University of São Paulo (USP) – São Carlos. I concluded my PhD in May 2014.

I am currently teaching at the School of Computer Science at the Federal University of Uberlânida, in Brazil, where I supervise some undergraduate and master’s degree students. I still conduct research in my area of expertise, which is Data Stream Mining.

My experience at INESC TEC was extremely important to me. I’ve had the privilege of working at LIAAD, a lab that hosts world renowned experts and important research projects. I’ve had the opportunity to work with important researchers in the area of Data Streams, such as João Gama, who was my co-supervisor in my PhD. Moreover, the bonds I now have with LIAAD researchers will make it possible to promote new partnerships between Brazil and Portugal. What surprised me the most at INESC TEC was the amount of industry-related research projects, as I believe that that is a key area.

I read the Bulletin of INESC TEC and from what I see the institution keeps growing. New projects are being developed, new students are doing their research and papers are being published, and my colleagues here in Brazil who have also worked at INESC TEC keep complimenting the institution as well.
