Every month, this section will honour a collaborator for an exceptional contribution in his/her area of activity. BIP’s Editors will have the final choice. However, the cooperation of every Centre Coordinator is precious since they will be the ones suggesting which collaborator should be distinguished.

Diogo Varajão

Diogo Varajão, CPES (September)

The Coordinator of the Technology Licensing Office* stated: “In August, INESC TEC’s Technology Licensing Office (SAL) submitted a “Power Conversion System” patent request, where the goal is to protect a new method that makes it possible to make the power converters more compact and bidirectional, controlling the power factor. This new method may have different commercial applications, particularly at the level of electric mobility and energy storage, which have an impact on the grid’s management.

This patent, which originated in CPES, was created as part of Diogo Varajão’s PhD. Besides Diogo, the team of inventors includes Luís Miranda and Prof. Rui Araújo. The team took the necessary steps to protect their results prior to presenting them at a renowned international conference in the area, guaranteeing the novelty that a patent requires.”

*Diogo Varajão was nominated by Catarina Maia (manager of SAL), with the support of the CPES coordinator

Luís Guimarães

Luís Guimarães, CEGI (September)

The coordinator of the Centre for Industrial Management and Engineering (CEGI) stated: “In July and August, Luís Guimarães was involved in five CEGI projects (three with SonaeMC, one with EDPR and another with Medlog). His role as Delivery Manager was fundamental to successfully conclude several of these projects. His work capacity, combined with an unusual intelligence, have been fundamental for CEGI’s growth.”

Rita Ribeiro

Rita RIBEIRO, LIAAD (October)

The coordinator of the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD) – “The paper “Failure Prediction - an Application in the Railway Industry” received the Carl H. Smith Student Paper Award at the 17th International Conference on Discovery Science. This is high quality applied research, and the award is prestigious to all institutions and people involved.

The paper describes the use of data mining techniques to detect, at an early stage, failures in the operation of automatic doors in trains. It is innovative because it applies filters to the results of data mining algorithms, which makes it possible to significantly reduce the number of false alarms.

Rita played a fundamental role in defining the problem, as well as in designing the solution and in its experimental evaluation. Rita’s contribution was key for the quality of the work developed. This work was carried out as part of project MAESTRA and all of the paper’s authors are members of LIAAD/INESC TEC.”
