INESC TEC celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science
In 2016, the UN established the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is celebrated on 11 February. The goal is to give more visibility to women and to promote an equal access to science.
This year we marked again the date at INESC TEC, with a group photography with some of our female researchers who wanted to be associated to the event.
In Portugal, women represent 45% of the total of researchers, but internationally only 30% of researchers are female – there are still many countries where equal access and women’s right to science are not a given. At INESC TEC, around 25% of the collaborators are females.
Gender equality in science is one of the goals included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the UN. "We need to encourage and support girls and women to achieve their full potential as scientific researchers and innovators", stated António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General.
