José António Sarsfield Cabral lectured his Last Lesson

On 1 March, José António Sarsfield Cabral, Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and collaborator of INESC TEC's Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI), celebrated his last lesson.

FEUP’s auditorium was filled with people that wanted to attend the Last Lesson of the Professor entitled “Uma viagem pela Garantia de Qualidade: do violino ao ensino superior” (in English “A trip around Quality Assurance: from the violin to the higher education”). Besides the colleagues, alumni, family and friends, a high number of entrepreneurs and managers were also present.

The session, which was led by Bernardo Almada-Lobo, member of INESC TEC’s Board, was opened with the Dean of FEUP, João Falcão e Cunha, preceding the intervention of the Rector of the University of Porto, António Sousa Pereira.

After a number of video testimonies about the people who collaborated over the years with José A. Sarsfield Cabral, it was then Rui Guimarães’ turn, a retired Full Professor at FEUP, who gave the main "Praise" of the session, in which important words were said about the role of the honoured professor in several institutions and about the values that identify him, namely honesty, solidarity, justice, competence, proactivity, commitment and enthusiasm, among others.

José António Sarsfield Cabral has a degree and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from FEUP, and has mainly developed his academic activity in the areas of Quality Management and Applied Statistics. He was Coordinator of the Unit of Management and Industrial Engineering of INESC TEC (current name for CEGI), proponent and director of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management of FEUP and also Pro-Rector of the University of Porto for Continuous Improvement. Sarsfield Cabral was distinguished with the award Personalidade Qualidade 2015 given by the Portuguese Association for Quality.
