INESC Porto organises pioneering competition in the world

INESC Porto is organising the competition “Fingerprint Singular Points Detection Competition” within ICIAR 2010 – International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, which will take place between 21 and 23 June 2010, at the Hotel Vermar, in Póvoa de Varzim.

This worldwide pioneering competition aims at detecting singular points (cores and deltas) in fingerprints. These points are essential in biometric identification systems based on the analysis of fingerprints since they make it possible to define the typology of the fingerprints and constitute the foundation for automatic identification processes.

This is the first time that a competition on this theme is organised in the world and it is expected that it will originate important contributions for biometrics, as well as for image processing and analysis, pattern recognition and machine learning.

The dates for the competition are now available and participants can start working on their projects. In the website, there is a database that can be used to train and develop algorithms.

The Fingerprint Singular Points Detection Competition is being organised by three INESC Porto researchers: Jaime Cardoso and Hélder Oliveira of the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), and Filipe Magalhães of the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE). The steering committee also includes another INESC Porto researcher – Miguel Velhote.

The ICIAR 2010 Conference is supported by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) and INEB – Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
