INESC Porto promises to revolutionize European automotive industry
INESC Porto is part of a European consortium that developed methods that make it possible for a car to be built in just five days, a process that usually requires weeks or months. Started in 2006 by the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP), the project AC/DC – Automotive Chassis Development for 5-Days Cars ended in September is characterized by its ambition to improve the industrial capacity and to reduce stocks, always putting the customers’ requirements ahead. BIP interviewed Jorge Pinho de Sousa, manager of UESP and leader of INESC Porto’s team in this consortium, who told us about the project that will bring a significant contribution towards the revolution of the European automotive industry.

Brazil purchases underwater robot developed by INESC Porto
A consortium of Brazilian companies signed a three-year contract with INESC Porto for the development of an autonomous underwater robot capable of monitoring dam structures and silting in the basins with high precision. The underwater robot will automatically collect information, thus making it possible to anticipate the detection of anomalies and to analyze the level of risk in dams with more precision and lower costs comparatively to the traditional processes.

UOSE develops environmental monitoring system for the Amazon region
The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) is currently developing a prototype to sense chemical parameters within the project “Study and Development of Optical Sensors to Monitor Environmental Parameters Remotely”. The project will be applied in the Amazon region, more specifically in the city of Belém, in Pará, where the rivers Guamá and Igarapé Sapocajuba present concerning pollution levels.

UESP researchers awarded in International Conference
The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) participated in PRO-VE'10 - 11th IFIP Working Conference on VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES. There, the participating members were awarded with second place in the category of “Best Papers of the Conference”. This event took place in Saint-Etienne, France, between 11 and 13 October, and it’s one of the most important conferences on Virtual Enterprises and Enterprise Networks.

Fabien Gouyon, researcher at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was invited to edit a special issue of the Computer Music Journal do MIT Press, together with Álvaro Barbosa of CITAR - Research Center for Science and Technology in Art and Xavier Serra of the Music Technology Group of the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.

USIG prepares Ambient Assisted Living solution for e-CAALYX
The Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG) has promoted, on 22 and 23 June, no INESC Porto, the third meeting of the European project eCAALYX (Enhanced Complete Ambient Assisted Living Experiment), which took place at INESC Porto. In the meeting, it was possible to define the dates for the development and filed tests, and to discuss the future positioning in the market, namely as far as problems associated to the certification of the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solution are concerned.

The third global meeting of the ICT4DEPRESSION project, developed by the Information and Computer Graphics Systems Unit (USIG), was held on 30 and 31 August at the University of Amsterdam. At the meeting, it was possible to conclude the definitions of the treatment modules to be incorporated, its sequence and the sensor mechanisms and the information to use.

The research work carried out by Alberto Pinto, Vice-Director of the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), was recently highlighted in the online version of the Indian Telegraph, the highest selling newspaper in Eastern India. This report followed the researcher’s presentations at the International Congress of Mathematicians ICM 2010, which took place in India, a worldwide mathematics congress that takes place every four years and where the "Fields" medals are awarded.
