Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

Pedro rocha almeida, Smarter Grid Solutions, Principal Engineer

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2007-2012
  • Centres at INESC TEC where you worked: CPES - Centre for Power and Energy Systems (former Unit of Energy Systems)
  • Names of projects you were involved in: European Commission's seventh Framework Research most prominent project – MERGE–, Innovation Support Fund’s  REIVE, EDP’s InovGrid  and several consultancy projects, such as the renewable expansion plan of Cape Verde for Gesto Energy and other projects to EDA. My first project was an ongoing development work for EFACEC.

Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC

Before coming to Smarter Grid Solutions, I worked in a French multinational company from GDF SUEZ group, Tractebel Engineering, where I worked as a consultant of energy systems. I was an internal consultant to central bodies of the group in order to assist in the decisions of investing /divestment in assets of energy productions and in the strategic development of the group. I was as external consultant, generally outside Europe where I developed grid expansion plans or generation on South America, Africa and Asia.

In your opinion how did your time at INESC TEC help you in your new role?

During my time in INESC TEC, I was presented to different working environments. I worked with R&D, and consultancy services and business development. R&D’s branch is at the core of all activities of INESC TEC, so it was introduced to different national and European projects. Consultancy was always a strength of CPES and for that reason, I had the opportunity to tackle specific problems of the company at an early stage. This combined with R&D’S branch prepares the ground for business. Concerning the business development and exposure to negotiation processes, I was fortunate to develop structuring projects from scratch. One of those projects was REIVE. It was possible to follow all the stages (first idea, creating the industrial consortium, fund-raising, proposal writing and final negotiation about terms and conditions) from the experience of Professor João Peças Lopes and the team effort of Joel Soares, André Madureira, Luís Seca and Carlos Moreira.

This combination of different features was something that prepared me for all the subsequent professional challenges I had in my career. The contact network I gathered here in INESC TEC has been so important to my career development. INESC TEC has been a valuable partner to Tractebel and Smarter Grid Solutions in several European projects.

In your opinion, how  has INESC TEC changed since you left?

Since I left, INESC TEC has grown very substantially with the integration of R&D team. I hope the spirit of curiosity and constant sense of challenge continues. From an organisational point of view, I imagine that the structure has evolved, since it would otherwise not be possible. It was a challenge back then and now with its new dimension it must be even more complicated to manage the communication between units and consequently avoid unit’s isolation. However, from my experience I know that INESC TEC is always up to a good challenge!
