New project to manage resources at indoor location

To create models for assets, equipments and enterprises internal management. This is the main purpose of WHERE.IS project, developed by INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM).

Assets management of enterprises is more spread and complex. For that reason, the need for information management solutions is growing. Those solutions will help the resources optimisation and waste reduction and / or process inefficiencies, particularly by knowing the assets location.

On the other hand, the paradigm of the dissemination of the Internet of Things (Iot) is based on getting and using information on communication with “things”. The main purpose of WHERE.IS project is to develop communication and position technology suitable to indoor locations, based on IoT technology.

The number and range of products (i.e., “things”); energy consumption and life of location devices; the difficulty, area and dynamic performance of indoor location are the main challenges.

This new technology will contribute to the development of new paradigms about asset management, equipments and diverse nature of organisation process dominant models, including industry, cultural and healthcare facilities.

Besides Wavecom and INESC TEC, Braga’s Hospital and Casa da Música are also project partners as end users. They will both monitor the project, providing specific requirements that the technology must fulfilled on both application scenarios in order to align the project technological developments with market needs.

This project is funded by Portugal 2020 and lasts for 24 months. Luís Pessoa, Henrique Salgado, Cândido Duarte, Rui Campos, Manuel Ricardo and Mário Lopes were the researchers involved.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
