Two INESC TEC’s researchers were nominated for the Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award of the ERCIM

João Tiago Paulo and Hadi Tork, INESC TEC’s collaborators of the High Assurance Software Laboratory (HASLab) and Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD), respectively, were two of the fifteen finalists present at the ERCIM 2017 Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award.

The Cor Baayen Young Researcher Award is awarded each year to a researcher, based on his promising work developed in computer science and applied mathematics. The award carries a prize of € 5000 and it was created in 1995 to honour the first ERCIM President, Cor Baayen. The nominations are made by a staff member of an ERCIM members institute, in this particularly case was made by INESC TEC. The 2017 winner was Tim Baarslag from CWI, in the Netherlands.

The MAP-i Doctoral Program in Computer Science of João Paulo explored new techniques on eliminating redundant data, know as deduplication techniques, which are applied on distributed storage systems. As a result of this work, there is a new deduplication system that allows to reduce hardware and management costs of the current storage systems, for example, Dropbox and Google Drive, without compromising their performance. The work also resulted in the development of new experimental evaluation tools which are customised to deduplication systems. The thesis was supervised by José Orlando Pereira.

Hadi Tork’ thesis, also under MAP-i, examines events detection problem in multidimensional data. The thesis provides relevant contributions in the use of tensors factorization for spatio-temporal event detection. The factorization methods were also used to anomaly detection for multidimensional data flow. The thesis was supervised by João Gama from LIAAD.

ERCIM - European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics - aims to promote at European level the collaborative work within the researchers’ community and enhance the industry collaboration.
