Simulators, gaming and e-learning: more than just a train trip

By Filipe Penicheiro*

I’ve always liked to travel by train and usually my train trips always end well. When I arrived at INESC TEC for the first time I was travelling by train, coming from Coimbra. More precisely, from Coimbra-B whose name reminds me of B-side of a cassette (if anyone still remembers cassettes...).

In 2017 I embraced the challenge to collaborate with INESC TEC, where I am supervised by Professor Leonel Morgado. This was an extremely important opportunity for me,because I was able to update my skills on management of science and technology, after working some time at a mobile start-up in which I co-founded.

My collaboration with INESC TEC falls under the activities of TEC4Growth project with a greater focus on FourEyes research line - Intelligence, Interaction, Immersion and Innovation for media industries. These activities have been developed with researchers from the INESC TEC Centre at Universidade Aberta (UAb), established on 2016. INESC TEC Centre at Universidade Aberta (UAb) consists of a group of researchers who are professors at that institution that conduct research activities inextricably linked to learning in online platforms.

Specifically, my activities are related to developing a roadmap, which is temporarily named as TEC4Skills, in order to address challenges about integration, availability and interoperability of e-learning systems in the business, industrial and institutional world.

The identified challenges of this roadmap are, for example, the development and the coordination of immersive technologies such as simulators, gaming and augmented reality and e-learning environments, the introduction and development of learning analytics and the process automation on these platforms. These challenges have been addressed with other developing projects, such as the Virtual Campus project supervised by Professor Vitor Rocio - Pro Rector of the Universidade Aberta- or with projects with organisations as TAP and the Portuguese Air Force which are supervised by Professor Leonel Morgado.

The coordination between immersive technologies, simulations and learning is related to my PhD thesis which addresses the relationship between digital entertainment contexts, such as "computer games" and the communication and historical understanding that I develop at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra in collaboration with the Computer Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra with joint supervision of Professor Licínio Roque.

In addition to these activities, I support the science and technology management of the members of INESC TEC Centre at Universidade Aberta, in order to establish and enhance the national and international working networks, fostering several applications to different financial frameworks, alongside with the support of the Funding Opportunities Office.
