Gallery of the Uncommon

Since this is the “Gallery of the Uncommon” and believe me, we have many uncommon things to tell, we could write a book about the bizarre requests that INESC TEC’s services receive.

Where are you now?

Every month INESC TEC sends highly qualified individuals into the market. These individuals often then go on to occupy important positions in some of the best national and international companies or they opt to form spin-offs. As the best way to perform technology transfer is through individuals, this section is dedicated to collaborators that trained at INESC TEC and now star in other companies and institutions.

Paulo ribeiro, EDP Distribuição, Senior Technician in the Operation and Management of Substation Protection

  • Year when you began working at INESC TEC and when you left: 2010-2011
  • Centre at INESC TEC where you worked: USE
  • Names of projects you were involved in: REIVE and MERGE

Explain your experience since leaving INESC TEC:

It seems like it was yesterday but the true is that I left INESC TEC nearly 7 years ago.

Since then, I joined and stayed in the same company, EDP Distribuição, namely in the Substation Services Department, where I work in the operation and maintenance of protection, command and control systems, Switching Stations and Substations in the south of the country (from the Greater Lisbon region to the Algarve).

Given that it is an operational area, the nature of the work is different, but both areas obviously have share a common ground in eletrotechnology, the electric energy system.

Internally in the enterprise, INESC Porto is the first name that emerges when you think about research projects and partners.

In your opinion how did your time at INESC TEC help you in your new role?

First of all, the fact that I had the luck and the opportunity to work at INESC TEC probably helped me to stand out among the other candidates in the admission process for the new role.

On the other hand, I emphasise a (good) habit of repeatedly consulting scientific articles to always be aware of the state-of-the-art of the subject that I am currently addressing. When you work in the research area, this practice is mandatory in order to stay updated at all times of scientific progress and I think it is positive to bring these practices to the industries and Utilities.

In your opinion, how  has INESC TEC changed since you left?

First of all, it has changed its name from INESC Porto to INESC TEC.

In addition, I honestly think that INESC TEC was already a "reference" in Portuguese research when I was there. Not only did INESC TEC managed to continue to be that reference but is also increasingly present in the international scene.
