ShoeInov Network honoured in the 2014 European Enterprise Promotion Awards

The initiative ShoeInov – Innovation Network for the Footwear Industry has received an Honourable Mention in the category of “Business Environment Development” of the 2014 European Enterprise Promotion Awards. Coordinated by the Centro Tecnológico do Calçado de Portugal – CTCP (Portuguese Footwear Centre), together with INESC TEC, the ShoeInov network aims at improving the competitiveness of Portuguese footwear companies by promoting R+D+i (Research, Development and Innovation).

The Network aims at implementing an innovation programme that includes R&TD (Research and Technological Development) projects and sectorial studies such as, for example, project SHOE ID (RFID applied to the production value chain, distribution and sales), developed together with INESC TEC.

Between 2007 and 2014, the ShoeInov network promoted about 15 R&TD projects, with a global investment of about 16.5 M€ to develop new materials, components and accessories for new types of shoes for niches and special markets. This included developing new fabrication processes and highly automated logistics, as well as creating multimedia contents to consolidate innovative business models.

One of the assets of this network is the fact that it promotes work in teams, as well as the development of new materials, new products, new equipment and processes. The ShoeInov network involves about 60 organisations, including technology-based companies, companies with advanced technologies and processes, entities from the Portuguese science and technology system and sector associations.

The 2014 European Enterprise Promotion Awards is an initiative launched by the European Commission to award the best entrepreneurship practices in Europe. The 12 projects in the different categories, as well as the two projects chosen by the national judges to represent Portugal in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards – EEPA 2014, have been revealed in a ceremony that took place in Lisbon, on 25 June, at IAPMEI – Instituto de Apoio às Pequenas e Médias Empresas e ao Investimento (a Portuguese institute that supports small and medium enterprises and investments).
