Free Nonsense

We live in a world where technology plays a major role. Many people assume that any technological breakthrough will be immediately accepted and welcomed by society. Sorry to disappoint you, but this is just not true...", Bruno Santos

INESC TEC participates in seminar at the Portuguese Naval Academy

INESC Porto, the coordinating entity of INESC TEC Associate Laboratory, participated in the seminar, “R&D in Autonomous Systems: New steps and challenges” that took place at the Portuguese Naval Academy on 30th September. The event was organised by the Portuguese Naval Academy and the Naval Centre of Research and aimed to give the academic community and industry the opportunity to present research projects and future prospects for R&D in the area of autonomous vehicles and systems in Portugal.

The area of autonomous vehicles and systems is expanding. However, a considerable part of the technology involved is already sufficiently mature for it to move from the research stage to being developed through public contracts.

The aim of this event was therefore to identify the R&D areas that must be addressed and select those with the most potential value for future missions for autonomous vehicles in Portugal and in terms of added value for the capabilities and knowledge of national groups. This initiative made it possible to align synergies between various R&D groups that are currently working in this area.

Representing INESC Porto in the area of autonomous vehicles, the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Unit (ROBIS) presented the FASt Sailboat (FEUP Autonomous Sailboat), a prototype for an autonomous surface vehicle that can complete long haul voyages without human intervention.

This prototype is clearly of interest for the Navy as any component of a Navy mission (defence, search and rescue, surveillance) could benefit from this type of vehicle. INESC Porto’s participation in this project follows the signing of the protocol with the Portuguese Navy to develop autonomous maritime systems that will help in search and rescue missions in catastrophes.
