INESC TEC establishes partnership in Food Engineering

The Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) at INESC Porto, the coordinator of INESC TEC Associate Laboratory, has established a partnership with the Department of Food Engineering at the University of Hacettepe (Ankara, Turkey). In the early stages of this partnership a student exchange will take place between this university and UOSE to investigate the viability of using fibre optic biosensors to detect E. Coli bacteria.

This partnership was formed when the researcher Pedro Jorge attended the COST MP0803 "Plasmonic components and devices" meeting that took place at the same time and place as the "Nanoplasmonic Sensors and Spectroscopy" conference in Gothenburg (Sweden) from 18th to 22nd September.

This core technology opens doors to new opportunities to apply it and will also be explored in an FCT project recently approved involving the centre for Genetics and Bioengineering at UTAD (the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro) and SOGRAPE, to assess the possibility of authenticating DOC wines (Designation of Origin) using the grapes’ genetic signature.
