The most relevant article of the month for the Seizure Journal has contribution from INESC TEC

João Paulo Cunha and Hugo Miguel Choupina, coordinator and researcher, respectively, of INESC TEC'S Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research (C-BER) are part of the team of authors of the most relevant article of August for the Seizure Journal, a reference in the epilepsy area.

The article “Quantitative and qualitative analysis of ictal vocalization in focal epilepsy syndromes”, which is the result of a longstanding cooperation with the University of Munich, addresses the research of the characteristics of frequency, localising significance, and intensity of the vocalisation during crisis (ictal) in different focal epilepsy syndromes”, in which a computational method developed by the researchers of INESC TEC/University of Porto was used.

According to the Seizure Journal’s editor, Markus Reuber, the distinction was well-deserved because at a time when medical image has been dominating the systems for diagnosis support, the article not only "focuses specifically on ictal audio features, but also reminds us that an ideal diagnosis process must engage all our senses”. “The epileptologists not only need to keep their eyes wide open, but they also need to stop, look and LISTEN”, writes the teacher of Clinical Neurology of the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.

In João Paulo Cunha’s opinion, “having clinical impact, and consequently having the opportunity of helping to improve the life of the epileptic patients is one of the main reasons why we do research on neuro engineering for over 25 years.

The team of authors is composed of researchers from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität of Munich, in Germany and from the University of Porto / INESC TEC, where the clinical component is under the responsibility of Munich and the technical component is under the responsibility of Porto.
