25 years of history, 25 years of victories
In May 2010, INESC celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of its presence in the city of Porto. These were 25 years of history, of struggle, of success to which BIP now dedicates an article in this Highlight section. BIP interviewed some of the members who participated in the constitution of INESC in Porto, responsible for the revolution that brought science and excellent to the city of Porto: José Tribolet, founder and current president of INESC, José Salcedo, the first Director of INESC in Porto, Manuel Barros, who was in charge, at the time, of the electronics area of the Optoelectronics Group, and Alírio Rodrigues, at the time President of the Governing Board of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). They explain us the stories behind the story and tell us about the “conspiracy meetings” that led to the constitution of one of the most important R&D institutions in the country.

Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of INESC in Porto
BIP is associating to the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of INESC in the city of Porto. As such, the “Special” section will, over the following months, visit each R&D Unit and group integrating the institute. More than “looking to the past”, the intention is to allow people to know INESC Porto LA’s current moment, the year in which INESC celebrates its 25th Anniversary in Porto, as well as the new goals and challenges that the next quarter of a century will bring.

Rector of UFRN Brazil visits INESC Porto
The Board of INESC Porto welcomed, on 13 May, the Rector of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Brazil, Ivonildo do Rego, and the Adviser for International Affairs, Anamaria Martins Moreira, who came to Portugal to sign an official statement expressing UFRN’s wish to increase its participation in R&D projects in the context of the establishment of INESC P&D Brazil.

Secretary of State for Energy and Innovation at the kick-off event of REIVE project
The Power Systems Unit (USE) has officially kicked off the project REIVE (Smart Electric Grids with Plug-in Electric Vehicles), a 2.6 million Euro project. Carlos Zorrinho, Secretary of State for Energy and Innovation, participated in ceremony for the public contract between INESC Porto and the Fund to Support Innovation (FAI), which took place on 26 April.

UESP researcher awarded by MIT|Portugal
Jorge Pinho de Sousa, manager of the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP), received the "MIT| Portugal Education Innovation Awards” from the Programme Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Portugal, in the area of Transport Systems.

UESP starts "COORDINATOR" European project
The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) started working on the COORDINATOR project last June. The intention with this project is to develop high performance hybrid algorithms to manage the production of electricity on the short term, taking into consideration thermal, hydro and wind resources.

UOSE researcher awarded by the International Society for Optical Engineering
Luís Fernandes, researcher at the Optoelectronics and Electronic Systems Unit (UOSE) and PhD student at the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP), received a three thousand dollar award from the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).

Rui Barros, researcher at the Information and Computer Graphics Unit (USIG), was member of the organizing committee of the 8th European Information Society Conference (EISCO), which took place in Bilbao, Spain, between 20 and 22 May.

UTM researcher teaches in multidisciplinary Summer School
Fabien Gouyon, researcher at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was invited to teach Music Information Retrieval at the Summer School of the Sound and Music Computing Conference (SMC), which takes place in Barcelona this month. This School is part of the International Sound and Music Computing Conference, an international forum for knowledge exchange on central and multidisciplinary topics on Sound and Music Computing.

USIG starts "CEMSDI" European project
The Information and Computer Graphics Unit (USIG) has recently signed a contract for the project CEMSDI - Civil-servants Empowerment for Multi-media Service Delivery ICT-enabled. This is a European project that is part of the ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP), on the “ICT for Government and Governance” topic. CEMSDI addresses the theme “Inclusive e-Governance: flexible, personalized and multichannel based service delivery targeting the socially disadvantaged”, through a Type-B Pilot.

The Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) started working, in June, on a new European project – the Customer-oriented and eco-friendly networks for healthy fashionable goods (CORENET).

INESC Porto signs contract with EDP Distribuição
In the context of the InovGrid project, a new contract was signed between INESC Porto’s Power Systems Unit (USE) and EDP Distribuição. The aim with this contract is to elaborate specifications for new functionalities that will explore the information provided by the InovGrid infrastructure and support the development of those functionalities.

UTM organizes Workshop on Robots and Musical Expressions
The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is organizing the Workshop on Robots and Musical Expressions – IROS 2010, the first in this area, part of the International Conference on Robots and Intelligent Systems (IEEE/RSJ IROS 2010), which will take place on 18 October, in Taipei, Taiwan. Fabien Gouyon is the member of INESC Porto integrating the organizing committee, together with members from the Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd./Tokyo Tech., and the Universities of Kyoto and Waseda, Japan.

Director of INESC Porto attends meeting on cooperation network in Brazil
Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC Porto, attended, on 27 May, a meeting in Brasília (Brazil) with Carlos Aragão and Gláucius Oliva, respectively the President and Director-General of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). The aim was to present the project for the establishment of a cooperation network in Brazil, Rede INESC Brasil (provisional designation that means INESC Brazil Network), and the network’s management model, INESC P&D Brasil (INESC R&D Brazil). This is an innovative model for the management of science and technology in Brazil, with potential for large multidisciplinary projects and an internationalization component.

INESC Porto concludes study for the dynamic analysis of Porto Santo’s electrical system
The Power Systems Unit (USE) has been studying the dynamic behaviour of electrical systems in the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, following the significant increase in renewable generation (wind and solar photovoltaic power) forecasted for short-term in these islands, having concluded the part of the study referring to Porto Santo.
