USIG researcher organizes European conference on e-government
Rui Barros, researcher at the Information and Computer Graphics Unit (USIG), was member of the organizing committee of the 8th European Information Society Conference (EISCO), which took place in Bilbao, Spain, between 20 and 22 May.
The EISCO Conferences are the main event in Europe for politicians and experts, locally and regionally, on e-government and Information Society. This conference works as a platform to discuss strategies, and to share experiences and mutual learning. EISCO 2010 is thus an important step in the implementation of the Digital Local Agenda (DLA) and its intention is to demonstrate how DLA can help achieve better services and a more inclusive society.
During the conference, participants address relevant matters that will make it possible to improve communication and organization in the local and regional authorities. Are these entities providing public services in an effective and efficient way that is closer to the citizens, taking advantage of the information and communication technologies? How can citizens be included and involved in the local existence using ICTs? These were some of the subjects addressed in the conference.
The organizing committee of EISCO 2010 also includes the Association of Basque Municipalities (EUDEL), the European Network for the Society of Information ELANET, from which INESC Porto is founding member, and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, in cooperation with the eris@, EUROCITIES, IT4ALL and e-Forum networks.
