"In this Unit, we can always hear, simultaneously, conversations in a pretty strange dialect that sounds like Russian! Expressions like “Dobro jutro” and “Kako si” are regularly heard", Bernardo Silva

INESC Porto welcomes delegation from University of Macau

On 23 JuIy, INESC Porto welcomed two Professors from the University of Macau (UM), Lam Chi Chiu and the former Rector of that University, Iu Vai Pan. The aim with this visit was to discuss possible future partnerships.

Led by Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC Porto, Lam Chi Chiu and Iu Vai Pan had the opportunity to visit INESC Porto’s Units and to understand more about the scientific reality cultivated at the institution.

When questioned about the differences that they believe are visible between Portugal and Macau, the professors answered promptly that “there aren’t many differences”. In fact, “both in Macau and in Portugal, there is a great tendency to look only at larger and more advanced countries”, Iu Vai Pan stated. Agreeing with Vladimiro Miranda, he believes that the similarities between Macau and Portugal are the result of the fact that they are both small countries/regions, which makes it necessary to “fight for success”, following a “strategy that allows us to be important players in different sectors”.

What Iu Vai Pan most admires in Portugal is the fact that the country is very modern and the fact that “even though small, it is built by the Portuguese”, that is, “a full functioning country. And that is only possible because of its people”, he reveals.

Because it is difficult for Macau to create critical mass, Lam Chi Chiu and Iu Vai Pan see in INESC Porto an important ally and strategic partner to compensate for that gap, also because of its umbilical relationship with the University of Porto, which makes it easier for INESC Porto to attract quality researchers and also to “export” its know-how. The major difficulty in the relationship between Macau and Portugal is, according to the visitors, the fact that the Universities don’t know each other that well. The joint organization of workshops is suggested as the starting point for a possible cooperation.
