Have your say

"(...) all, without exception, say that this was an incredibly positive step. The group is also growing in numbers and will soon have a dimension that we would have hardly imagined if it were not for INESC Porto.", António Paulo Moreira

Free Nonsense

"In this Unit, we can always hear, simultaneously, conversations in a pretty strange dialect that sounds like Russian! Expressions like “Dobro jutro” and “Kako si” are regularly heard", Bernardo Silva

UTM researcher teaches in multidisciplinary Summer School

Fabien Gouyon, researcher at the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM), was invited to teach Music Information Retrieval at the Summer School of the Sound and Music Computing Conference (SMC), which takes place in Barcelona this month. This School is part of the International Sound and Music Computing Conference, an international forum for knowledge exchange on central and multidisciplinary topics on Sound and Music Computing.

SMC is for students with different training and interests, from Electrical Engineering to Computing Sciences, Music, Art, Sound Recording and Design. The School is an opportunity for young researchers to learn more about some multidisciplinary topics and to share their experiences with other young people, through the study of the sounds of Barcelona. For that, they will use Freesound.org, a collaborative database that stores sounds, launched within the Creative Commons Sampling Plus license.

The recreation and the study of the sounds of Barcelona will be carried out within different work subtopics that cover all aesthetic and technical aspects of the analysis and creation of sound environments. For that, the Summer School programme is divided into lectures and practical sessions. For more information, go to the Conference’s Website.
