"In this Unit, we can always hear, simultaneously, conversations in a pretty strange dialect that sounds like Russian! Expressions like “Dobro jutro” and “Kako si” are regularly heard", Bernardo Silva

UESP researcher awarded by MIT|Portugal

Jorge Pinho de Sousa, manager of the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP), received the "MIT| Portugal Education Innovation Awards” from the Programme Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Portugal, in the area of Transport Systems.

This prize is given to professors of the "Transport Systems Analysis" course of the Master’s Degree in Complex Transport Infrastructure Systems, and it represents an acknowledgement of the performance of Portuguese professors in several areas of the MIT|Portugal Programme.

"This acknowledgement gives me great joy and constitutes a clear incentive for us to improve our performance as professors in increasingly demanding and competitive environments. I want to believe that being acknowledged as a good professor of MIT|Portugal is also recognizing that we are also good professors in our faculty, in this case FEUP [Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto] and in the University of Porto itself. And that is, naturally, another reason to be proud ", Jorge Pinho de Sousa declares.

The winner of the "MIT-Portugal Education Innovation Awards" also highlights that the “secret" of an innovative education requires "learning environments in which participation and creativity are permanently encouraged and where competences are shared in a relaxed and, if I may say, fun way”, adding promptly that "teaching in relaxed environment requires an enormous planning effort and a clear and explicit consensus on the intended objectives ".

The award ceremony took place on 4 May at the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), in Lisbon.
