Director of INESC Porto attends meeting on cooperation network in Brazil
Vladimiro Miranda, director of INESC Porto, attended, on 27 May, a meeting in Brasília (Brazil) with Carlos Aragão and Gláucius Oliva, respectively the President and Director-General of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). The aim was to present the project for the establishment of a cooperation network in Brazil, Rede INESC Brasil (provisional designation that means INESC Brazil Network), and the network’s management model, INESC P&D Brasil (INESC R&D Brazil). This is an innovative model for the management of science and technology in Brazil, with potential for large multidisciplinary projects and an internationalization component.
Other members of the project, seven Brazilian universities, were also present at the meeting: Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), University of São Paulo (USP), Unicamp in Campinas, Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).
According to Vladimiro Miranda “the fact that it was possible to mobilize all these delegations that strongly defended the project is a sign that all conditions for success are met”. On the other hand, CNPq’s “incredibly positive” response to the project is a good step for the Council to acknowledge it. The will to establish a consortium “is the best foundation for the process to succeed”, the director of INESC Porto guarantees.
At the meeting it was also possible to discuss, not only the type of cooperation network management, but also the form of Arrangement that can connect partners, from technology transfer to business incubation and intellectual property management. All these themes were addressed in the context of international projects, covering the subjects that INESC P&D Brasil and Rede INESC Brasil will tackle. “Now we just have to hope that the legal aspects of the new association will be solved”, Vladimiro Miranda states. In fact, the association has already started working on several projects with the cooperation of these partners, namely projects that combine synergies between INESC Porto and institutions such as Unicamp, the Federal University of Pará, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal University of Santa Catarina. This means that “the network has its own dynamics and did not need to wait for the legal constitution to start working on ideas” the director of INESC Porto concludes.
