Have your say

"(...) all, without exception, say that this was an incredibly positive step. The group is also growing in numbers and will soon have a dimension that we would have hardly imagined if it were not for INESC Porto.", António Paulo Moreira

Free Nonsense

"In this Unit, we can always hear, simultaneously, conversations in a pretty strange dialect that sounds like Russian! Expressions like “Dobro jutro” and “Kako si” are regularly heard", Bernardo Silva

UTM organizes Workshop on Robots and Musical Expressions

The Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit (UTM) is organizing the Workshop on Robots and Musical Expressions – IROS 2010, the first in this area, part of the International Conference on Robots and Intelligent Systems (IEEE/RSJ IROS 2010), which will take place on 18 October, in Taipei, Taiwan. Fabien Gouyon is the member of INESC Porto integrating the organizing committee, together with members from the Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd./Tokyo Tech., and the Universities of Kyoto and Waseda, Japan.

Music is, unquestionably, the most popular form of expression and a fundamental occupation of the current technological society. It is only natural to expect that robots should be our partners and interact with us in daily environments where musical sounds are present. However, much work is still needed for robots to be able to analyze and synthesize musical sounds as we do, to understand and reason about music, and to adapt behaviors accordingly.

The processing of high-level descriptions of music from audio signals is a focus of the Music Information Retrieval (MIR) community. Producing computational models of such high-level behaviors, embedded in robotic platforms, calls for novel research at the frontier between Robotics and MIR.  This full-day workshop precisely aims at bringing "the best of two worlds" while fostering scientific exchanges of the highest scientific standard between researchers in Robotics, MIR and Cognitive Science.

The Workshop thus constitutes a platform for the discussion of the most advanced technology within musical robotics, fostering the international collaboration between participating researchers and the development/exchange of free robot/software platforms and tools.

Fabien Gouyon, collaborator at UTM, is representing INESC Porto in this Workshop.
